Abstract

During the catheter implantation process, the adhesion and colonization of bacteria, along with the attachment of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), have the potential to result in hospital-acquired infections (HAI) and the development of surface biofilms. Moreover, the urease produced by proteus mirabilis enzymatically degrades urea, leading to an alkaline environment on the catheter surface and consequently promoting the increased formation of stones, including calcium phosphate and magnesium phosphate. As a result, achieving effective and enduring antimicrobial properties remains one of the most formidable challenges in the field of catheters. The guanidine exhibiting more efficient antimicrobial properties compared to quaternary ammonium salt and lower cytotoxicity compared to amine was utilized to prepare an antimicrobial coating on the polymer surface. By employing hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA), N-(3-aminopropyl) methacrylamide hydrochloride (APMA), and 4-methacryloyloxybenzophenone (BP) as monomers, ploy(HEMA-co-APMA-co-BP) and PHAB with amine-functionalized side chains were prepared via free radical polymerization. Subsequently, the amine groups on PHAB were modified into guanidine groups (PHGB) by guanidino modification. Thus, the application of guanidine-based polymers in antimicrobial surface coatings for urinary catheters was facilitated.
