Abstract

As the basic graphite component, graphene has become a hotspot in the field of tribology at home and abroad due to its unique two-dimensional structure and excellent friction-reducing properties. In order to obtain a stable lubrication effect, researchers have raised intense concern about their anti-wear ability. In this paper, the progress of wear research on graphene at different scales is reviewed. At the microscale or nanoscale, the wear behaviors, wear mechanisms, and factors that can regulate the wear-resistance of graphene are introduced in detail, including layer number, interfacial forces between the graphene and tip, graphene defects, substrate hardness, surface roughness, and adhesion between the graphene and substrate. At the macroscale, the preparation methods of macroscopic graphene coating can be divided into two categories:direct growth or transfer methods and self-assembly deposition methods. For the graphene membrane prepared by direct growth and transfer methods, their wear behaviors and mechanisms are reviewed, and the causes of the difference in wear behaviors between nanoscale and macroscale are described in detail. Also, the regulation methods of graphene membrane are summarized, including number layer, initial quality and uniformity, preparation method, environmental conditions, and graphene modification. For the graphene coatings prepared by self-assembly deposition methods, the wear behaviors, wear mechanisms, and its discrepancy with graphene membrane are summarized. The typical approaches to prolong the durability of graphene coatings and their mechanisms are listed. Finally, the future direction of graphene wear research and some problems to be explored in the realization of graphene macroscopic application are proposed.
