Abstract

The work aims to study the effect of fluorographene on the corrosion resistance of epoxy resin coating. SEM, XRD, FT-IR, AFM and particle size distribution were used to characterize the microstructure of FG. The stability of FG in EP was studied by settlement experiment, and the distribution of FG in the coating was studied by the cross-section morphology of coating. The corrosion behavior of EP coating and FG/EP coating in 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution was investigated by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). FG was 1 μm in size and 5 nm in thickness, showing a typical lamellar structure. FG had good dispersion stability in EP. The contact angle of the EP coating increased from 95.3° to 110.9° with the addition of FG, which increased the hydrophobicity of the coating and decreased the contact between the corrosive medium and the surface of the coating. At the beginning of immersion, the low frequency impedance modulus (|Z|0.01Hz) of the EP coating and FG/EP coating were about 1011 Ω?cm2. With the increase of immersion time, the |Z|0.01Hz of EP coating decreased rapidly to 109 Ω?cm2, while the FG/EP coating remained above 1011 Ω?cm2 during 3000 h immersion. The coating resistance (Rc) also showed a similar changing regularity. FG increased the barrier property of EP coating and improved the long-term protection performance of the coating. Adding FG to EP coating can form a “Mazes” inside the coating, improve the barrier performance of the coating, increase the diffusion path of the corrosive medium, delay the penetration process of the corrosive medium, and improve the long-term protection of the coating on the substrate.
