Abstract

The work aims to provide theoretical basis for selection of packer cartridge rubber material in one gas field of the East China Sea. The tensile strength, elongation at break, hardness and permanent compression deformation after the corrosion and permeability in corrosive medium of the major rubber materials used in China (like hydrogenated nitrile rubber, fluorocarbon rubber, fluorine and silicone rubber and AFLAS rubber) were compared through the performance test after the corrosion and the permeability test in corrosive medium. By comparison, hydrogenated nitrile rubber was the best, and then followed by AFLAS rubber. Fluorine and silicone rubber and fluorocarbon rubber performed poorer. The impermeability of four kinds of rubber materials became bad as the differential pressure increased. The impermeability of fluorine and silicone rubber was better than that of all the other materials in four pressure conditions at the same temperature (120 ℃). The impermeability of four kinds of rubber materials became bad while the temperature increased, the impermeability of fluorine and silicone rubber was better than that of all the other materials at four different temperature in the same differential pressure (10 MPa). The performance (tensile strength, elongation at break, hardness and permanent compression deformation) of hydrogenated nitrile rubber is relatively better and then followed by AFLAS rubber. Fluorine and silicone rubber and fluorocarbon rubber are the poorest. Temperature has bigger effect on permeability of rubber than differential pressure, and there is a threshold effect for some rubber materials. The gas impermeability of rubber can rapidly decrease when certain temperature is exceeded. Therefore, in order to extend the safe service life of downhole tools, the rubber materials should be chosen according to the service environment, and the packer cartridge should be kept in stress equilibrium as far as possible.
