Abstract

The work aims to study tribological properties and rolling lubrication performance of nitrogen-containing borate ester. A new extreme pressure anti-wear additive of nitrogen-containing borate ester (NB) was synthesized. The synthesized nitrogen-containing borate ester was firstly mixed with tributhyl phosphate, tricresyl phosphate, respectively. Then the mixture was added to aluminum rolling base oils in proper proportion, and finally aluminum rolling lubricating oil was prepared. Tribology properties of various lubricating oils for aluminum rolling were investigated by a four-ball friction-wear tester. Rolling lubrication performance was analysed by performing rolling experiment, rolled surface morphology was observed by scanning electron microscope. By comparing wear scar diameter, friction coefficient, maximum non-seizure load, rolling pressure, friction coefficient of rolling, minimum rolling thickness and rolled surface quality, the influences of mixing proportion of nitrogen-containing borate ester on tribological properties and rolling lubrication performance were investigated. When the mixing coefficient of nitrogen-containing borate ester to tributhyl phosphate, tricresyl phosphate was 0.5 and 0.25, respectively; friction coefficient of the sample decreased by 35.2% and 18.4%, respectively; and wear scar diameter decreased by 48.4% and 19%, respectively, which showed better anti-wear and anti-friction effects than monomer additives. The rolling pressure reduced to 164 MPa and 160 MPa, respectively; the friction coefficient of rolling reduced to 0.076 and 0.078, respectively; and the minimum rolling thickness decreased by 23% and 21%, respectively. Rolled surface was smooth and of good quality with uniform furrows. Tribological properties and rolling lubrication performance are improved by nitrogen-containing borate ester, mixture of the two has good synergistic effect, and rolled pieces are of good surface quality.
