Abstract

The work aims to study influences of Cr layers on structures and properties of Cr/Cr2N nano-multilayer coatings, so as to provide theoretical basis for applications of hard coatings in corrosive mediums including seawater. A series of Cr/Cr2N nano-multilayer coatings with different depths of Cr layers were prepared relying on multi-arc ion plating technology. Structures, morphologies and mechanical properties of multilayer coatings were tested with XRD, SEM, nano-indentation and scratch tester, respectively. Electrochemical behaviors of the Cr/Cr2N nano-multilayer coatings in seawater were evaluated with electrochemical workstation. Furthermore, tribological properties of the as-deposited coatings were tested with a tribo-meter. Cr layer had certain effect on structures of the Cr/Cr2N nano-multilayer coatings. Wear rates of the different depths of coatings in seawater were similar, which were approximately 1.2×10?6 mm3/(N?m). The low wear rate indicated excellent wear resistance of the as-deposited coatings. The Cr/Cr2N nano-multilayer coatings with nearly 21 nm thick Cr layer exhibited excellent corrosion resistance with the high impedance in seawater. Metal layer of proper thickness including Cr layer and the interface is crucial to high corrosion resistance of the Cr/Cr2N nano-multilayer coatings. The excellent corrosion and wear resistance of Cr/Cr2N nano-multilayer coatings made them good protective materials in corrosive mediums including seawater.
