Abstract

The work aims to prepare environment-friendly marine antifouling paints, i.e., marine antifouling paints of low surface energy. With glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) and butyl acrylate (BA) as primary monomers, and dodecafluoroheptyl methacrylate (FMA) and methacryloxy propyl trimethoxyl silane (KH570) as modified monomers, a fluorine-silicon modified polyacrylate resin layer of low surface energy was prepared by free radical copolymerization. Chemical structure and thermal properties of the resin were analyzed and characterized by adopting Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and differential scanning calorimetry. Effects of FMA and KH570 content on resin coating performance were discussed based on scanning electron microscope (SEM), contact angle test, surface energy calculation, adhesion test, acid and alkali resistant test and antifouling property test of the resin coating. The contact angle could reach 112.0°, surface energy to 18.425 mJ/m2, adhesion to level 1 and good antifouling property is achieved when the content of FMA and KH570 was 15% and 10%, respectively. Individual involvement of fluorine monomer and silicon monomer in copolymerization modification of polyacrylate resin can reduce surface energy of resin coating, while joint involvement of the two monomers can significantly reduce the surface energy. Therefore, the modified polyacrylate resin can be used as a promising marine antifouling paint of low surface energy.
