Abstract

The work aims to improve properties of Ni-SiC nanocomposite coatings by investigating effects of electrodeposition methods on properties of the coating. Ni and Ni-SiC nanocomposite coatings were prepared by DC electrodeposition and pulse electrodeposition, respectively. Morphology and composition of the coatings were studied with scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectrometer, deposition rate was calculated by measuring mass difference between the plating pieces before and after plating, hardness was measured with hardness tester, corrosion resistance of the Ni-SiC nanocomposite coatings was studied in polarization curve and electrochemical impedance methods, respectively in 3.5% NaCl solution, and the effects of DC electrodeposition and pulse electrodeposition methods on properties of the coatings were analyzed. For the Ni-SiC nanocomposite coating prepared in pulse electrodeposition method, morphology was more smooth, uniform and compact, the hardness was up to 616.3HV, self-corrosion current 9.56×10?6 A, both hardness and corrosion resistance were superior to that of the Ni-SiC nanocomposite coating prepared by DC electrodeposition. The properties of composite coatings are influenced by electrodeposition methods to a great extent, the properties of Ni-SiC nanocomposite coatings prepared in pulsed electrodeposition method are much better.
