Effects of Cold Plasma Treatment Process on Surface Properties of Acrylontrile-butadiene Rubber

Abstract

The work aims to improve surface wettability of acrylontrile-butadiene rubber (NBR5080) by adopting cold plasma treatment (CPT). The surface of NBR5080 was treated by adjusting technological parameters (power, time and pressure) of the cold plasma in Ar, air and O2 atmospheres. The static contact angle of NBR5080 was tested and the surface energy was calculated. The surface morphology was observed by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and atomic force microscope (AFM). The chemical elements of the surface were analyzed by using the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). After treatment of the 3 atmospheres, the static contact angle of NBR5080 reduced from 91° to 25°, 27° and 35° and the surface roughness amouted from 16.37 nm to 97.78 nm, 75.12 nm and 59.58 nm. The peeling strength between PTFE film and NBR5080 increased from 0 N?m–1 to 44.2 N?m–1, 40.6 N?m–1 and 32.3 N?m–1 after being treated in Ar, air and O2 respectively. The 3 treatment media can improve the surface wettability of NBR5080, the treatment effect Ar is the best and the technological parameters are 100 W (power), 600 s (duration) and 30 Pa (pressure); the adhesion between NBR5080 and PTFE increases significantly and the surface wettability of NBR5080 is subject to timeliness after treatment.
